Road to Krakow

We had arranged to meet up with Joanna, yet another young Polish architect colleague of Graeme’s, who had kindly offered to show us around the city. On route to Krakow we had intended to spend a few days in Warsaw but root canal treatment and the draw of Gdansk made this unfeasible (the positive side  being that we must come back to Poland again). We did however overnight halfway between Gdansk and Krakow, on a delightful farm close to Lodz. The farmer greeted us with a glass of homemade blackberry liqueur and bid us to park anywhere, which after another glass of liqueur was just about all we could do. We hadn’t had time to shop for food but the farmer very kindly provided us with half a dozen fresh eggs to soak up the alcohol.

Joanna had very generously booked us into the Sheraton Hotel in Krakow for two nights. We found a motorhome garage where we could leave the van and headed into Krakow on the bus with our suitcase full of non-camping clothes and the joyful anticipation of 48 hours of

proper glass, china crockery and a bath! We met on the rooftop terrace of the Sheraton having, by then, squeezed in a couple of baths.

We visited the famous Wawel Castle which dominates the city skyline and the Vistula River which flows through the city, and afterwards we wandered around the busy streets of Krakow, later returning to the hotel to get ready for the evening….and another bath!
