Les Baux de Provence

After a rather hectic few days and having not stayed on a campsite for a while we were very keen to find a somewhere we could put down roots and catch up with all those necessary housekeeping jobs. St Remy provided the perfect spot. Situated close to the town with a big swimming pool we were well placed to avail ourselves of all the delights of St Remy. Yet another French Romanesque town there was much to see. Van Gough had spent time in the local hospital and many of the  paintings  he had done during his stay  adorned the streets of the town. The ruins of the ancient Roman city of Glanum built in 49BC was a short cycle outside of the town.  For a more strenuous bike ride, the village of Les Baux de Provence (as in bauxite), set into a rocky outcrop in the Alpilles mountains was well worth the effort. This spectacular Iron Age settlement justifiably earns its reputation as one of the most picturesque villages in France.  Feeling rested and recharged we felt it was time for another vineyard sojourn.
